Spring-Summer 2008

Yoga of the Sefirot

Friday mornings at American Jewish University

Experience ancient Jewish wisdom about the holiness of the human body.
The Medieval Jewish Mystics taught that the world was created using 10 attributes of G-d,
each of which is associated with a different limb or organ.
Through movement and intention, we can connect with these attributes
and help repair ourselves and the world.
Strengthen, relax, meditate on and learn from a different sefirah and body part each week.

Gentle Yoga?

Gentle Jewish Yoga is for anyone ready to help bring peace to the world, starting with themselves. By combining passive, reclining poses, breathwork and long holds, Gentle Jewish Yoga invites our bodies to trust that they are safe, and can find new flexibility and ease by softening and patiently accepting change.

Everyone’s body is unique, so there is no one “correct” way to do any pose or move. Different versions of each are presented, so that participants can choose what works for them. The only  standing poses are for balance and can be done while holding onto a chair. Mostly we stay seated, lie down, or kneel (but only if this is comfortable for the participant). People who cannot easily get up from the floor can take the entire class in a chair.

It is just as perfect for beginners, couch potatoes, seniors and the disabled as it is for athletes. The only goal is relaxation, a challenging skill to acquire.

Jewish Yoga?

Yoga is a dance with the Divine, a spiritual technology that combines symbolism-rich poses with meditative breathwork to calm the body, focus the mind and set the soul humming with spiritual energy.

Judaism may at one time have had a movement practice of its own, but most of the details have been lost to time. Today, Jewish yoga teachers around the world are recreating this tradition by combining movements from the yoga world with Judaism's symbols, music and mystical practices.

We Get Raves

"I want to thank you so much for coming to Temple Beth David and presenting such fascinating and inspiring workshops.  Everyone has been raving about them - and you ranked 5 = excellent on all the surveys."

-- Melanie Alkov, event coordinator, Temple Beth David, Westminster, Calif.

Thank you, Avivah, for the thoughtful and educational Jewish Yoga class you brought to the UC San Diego Hillel on May 31, 2007, as part of our "Vitamin J" Judaism and health programming series. The class was the perfect mix of meaningful Jewish learning and envigorating yoga. It is truly a unique approach to Judaism!
-- Adam Gerber, JCSC Fellow, Hillel of San Diego at UCSD

"I took Avivah’s class for the month of November and loved the stretching and de-stressing of it, and the Jewish meditation on the parsha of the week!  Avivah is a very knowledgeable and compassionate teacher. She made adjustments for all the ailments and weaknesses I was having. She is more into the spiritual aspect than pushing the physical. I loved it, and I can't wait to resume her class."
-- Shoshi Wilchfort, Sisterhood officer, Temple Beth Am, Los Angeles, Calif.
